Just a Glimpse

A glimpse of the flowers, half hidden by shutters. A glimpse of color. I love this photo, another Burano image. Today it is sunny and -3C, the ground is frosty and I just needed something that said “warm and summery.” That’s the beauty of photos, they can take you to a different place and time if you want to go. You get to revisit places you’ve been or see places you’ve never been through someone else’s eyes.

Yesterday we got back from a great weekend in the Dolomites, the Alps up near Austria. I won’t have time to go through pics until this weekend, because this week is study week – my theory driver’s exam is on Friday. My practice tests have improved from passing 40% of the time to passing 60% of the time… but those still aren’t good odds. I’m off to make a pot of tea and to study!

Back to Amsterdam

I’ve had this photo of Amsterdam stuck in my head lately, so this weekend I went and found it to share. This photo to me says “Amsterdam” maybe in a way that no other does. It’s the bike, the architecture. But not only that, I love that the bike is personalized. In a place with so many bicycles, a few people went a little step beyond to make theirs recognizable. With flowers, ribbon, special paint jobs. Bicycle as transportation, but also as a means of personal expression. I love it!

Sometimes it’s just Pretty

That’s what I think of this photo of Bellagio on Lake Como. Just pretty. Pretty day, pretty flowers, pretty mountains, pretty town. It’s nice to just appreciate something pretty, so today here is my gift to you – this image!

There is a note on a 3×5 card on my magnet board I’ve had there for a while – “There is one action I can take for my creativity daily. What is it for today?” It’s a reminder that even when life is overwhelming, work is totally busy, I’m not having a lot of personal time for stuff I would like to do… there is one thing I can do each day for my creativity. And if I do that one thing, however small, I remain more centered, happy and true to myself because expressing my creativity is something that is a need for me in my life.

What I’ve realized in the last few days is that this photo a day effort has become this “one thing” for me in a lot of ways. Every day, I’m picking out a photo and reflecting on it a bit. I enjoy that, because it’s amazing what surprising things sometimes come out by just writing about an image. I get to share it with whoever reads this blog, which I enjoy as well. And it inspires me in other ways – to do a painting of an image that strikes me, to look for more pictures to share, to keep taking photos as we go on our adventures, to refine my eye as I progress in my photography.

So, thanks for being part of my little creative adventure here! I hope that you can also find one little thing today that inspires you.

Bright

In the mood for some color and sun today, so I pulled out this window box photo. It’s one of my early ones here, from Pavia, and also one of my favorites. I love the unique flowers, that were matched perfectly to the building color. This was in a back street, not a normal thoroughfare, yet there was this attention to beauty and detail. I keep saying this, but this is something that I love about Italy.

Yesterday, I went to see an exhibition of paintings and drawings by American artist Edward Hopper at the Palazzo Reale in Milano. It was fabulous, he was an amazing painter of light and of unique American scenes. They compare his work to a “photographic view” so maybe that’s why I resonated with it so much. My favorite painting in the exhibition was Cape Cod Sunset, but this image doesn’t do it justice. The sky was the perfect rendering of the rainbow dusk sky that I’ve always loved. One thing I’ve learned about works of art, is that seeing them in a book or online is not the same as seeing them in person. The color, the texture, the feel is completely different.

It’s interesting that I discover this wonderful American artist in Italy, but I guess that’s just part of my rediscovery of art here. If you have a chance, take a look at some of his work. Or, maybe go see some art in person somewhere, to have your own artistic discovery. Happy Sunday!

Create

This is one of my favorite photos from one of our many trips into the city of Milan, our “home” city if you will. Since we live in the small “suburban” town of Vedano al Lambro, we go into Milan to get the big city feel. I love the energy of the city! There is nothing like the feel of the Piazza del Duomo, packed with people on a Saturday, all just out for the sake of being out.

This is the vegetable carving guy that we saw in the same place everytime we went into the city this summer. He carves amazing works of art from carrots and turnips and beets, like this rose. It is amazing to watch. It’s more like he frees the object from inside the vegetable rather than carves it, he’s just removing the unnecessary parts.

We’re going into Milan today for the day, to see what we can see, explore the town a bit. I have a couple of art exhibits to choose from and I’ve looked up a couple of toy stores for Brandon to search for Lego train track. We won’t see our vegetable carver, it’s too cold this time of year, but I’m sure we’ll see something interesting!

Windows on the World

I love window shots. I especially love window shots here in Italy. Just look at this window. Imagine it without the flowers and plants – it’s just a barred window at the back of a building, by a parking lot with all of the electrical boxes. Ugh. But add a couple of window boxes (creatively made of wine boxes, no less!), some draping vines and you have a beautiful little garden scene. Still at the back of the building, still with a parking lot right next to it, but you don’t notice that! Window art, for sure.
