A Visit to Victoria

You can get addicted to visiting other countries. After living abroad and traveling, when I have a chance to visit another country, I take it! I’ve missed the ability to just travel and our or two to visit another culture than mine. Since we were a 90 minute ferry ride from Victoria, BC on our trip to Port Angeles last week, we decided we’d pop on over and explore!

The day we chose was a chilly, grey, blustery day, but it was fun to walk around and get a feel for this city. It feels very European, both in the architecture and the mix of cultures and languages heard. One day was barely enough to scratch the surface. We definitely need to go back!

It was a good chance to practice my urban travel photography, which is a bit rusty since I’ve been photographing so much in nature. I’ve still got it in me, though! There’s nothing like an interesting bicycle scene to spark the creative juices.

I think the bill postings you find always say a lot about a city, don’t you?

I love Chinatown, in any city. There is something so interesting about the shops crammed with merchandise…

Of course, there is a requisite stop at the Parliament building…

And the silly family selfie! We call this the “Patrick face.” In a family selfie a while ago, my husband was making this weird face that made Brandon and I giggle, so it’s become a family joke.

I stopped in to see some art at the Robert Bateman gallery. He is a very talented painter who does realistic wildlife scenes, although I preferred some of his early abstract work on display. Next time, I want to get to the art museum to see the work of Emily Carr.

Chilled and tired of walking, we stopped into a coffee shop for a warm chai and some free WiFi. My son was going into smartphone withdrawal without connectivity all day!

Unfortunately, we didn’t make plans early enough to include a tea at the Empress Hotel. Maybe next time!

The images were all captured using ProCamera, had basic adjustments in Snapseed, and then edited with my new Klahhane Ridge formula in the Stackables App. You can download the Klahhane Ridge formula from my last blog post here.

That last image of the Empress Hotel, with the interesting angle and grey skies made me think “film noir.” Experimenting with it, the Tintype formula in the Stackables App gave the feel I was looking for. Not the usual view of the Empress, but I think it works well for the architecture and the dreary sky.

It was a fun day of wandering a beautiful city. I can’t believe we had never gotten up there for a visit in our all of our years of living so close. Now we need to plan a trip specifically to Victoria, so we can see everything we missed!

Oregon Coast Travelogue

We spent the weekend unplugged from the Internet and plugged in to the family at our favorite spot on the coast, Washburne State Park. We hiked, we walked on the beach, we played, we made photographs. It was a wonderful break from our normal lives. We need to do this more often!

Enjoy a few pics from the area, all edited in Stackables with a formula I created called “Heceta.” It works great on landscapes!

UPDATE 3-June-15: If you would like the “Heceta” formula for your own use, do the following:
1. Make sure the Stackables app is installed on your iOS device.
2. On your iOS device, download the formula file from this link. (This is a Dropbox link, and you may be prompted to save the file to your Dropbox account, if you have one. Go ahead and save it to your Dropbox and then download from there.)
3. When you go to download or open the file, use “Open in…” and choose the “Open in Stackables” option.
4. Stackables will open and ask if you want to import the formula, click “Import.”
5. To use the formula, load a photo and then go to Favorite Formulas (the ones with a heart!). You will see the “Heceta” formula there. Have fun!!

Hello from the Sloma family!

I forget we have this amazing place, the Oregon Coast, just an hour from our home in Corvallis. One more reason to love where I live!

Singing the Praises of Stackables (A Mobile Tutorial)

I have a new love! I’ve recently discovered Stackables, a fantastic editing app, and I thought I would share what I’m enjoying about the app and what I’ve been creating with it.

Merging

Stackables is a layering app which allows you to add multiple textures, filters, gradients, patterns and adjustment layers to an image. You can also access and save Formulas, which are basically presets that have already been created using multiple layers. The layering is fantastic: You can add new layers, remove layers, turn layers on and off, and shuffle the order of the layers around as you work through an edit. The adjustability of individual layers is powerful too. Opacity, blending mode and rotation can be changed individually for each layer. It’s like having a “lite” version of Photoshop at my fingertips. The only thing I can’t do is import my own layers, beyond the starting image. Luckily, Stackables has a broad range of all types of layers so I’m not limited.

Let’s take a quick look at operation. There are two versions of Stackables, one for iPhone and one for iPad. Both start at $0.99 with in-app purchases available (I highly recommend getting the Master Pack for $1.99). The screen shots below are from the iPad version, since that’s what I primarily use for editing.

As you load an image, you have the choice of what file type you want to save. This is great, because you can save the images you create as a high resolution, lossless file type like PNG or TIFF. You can also crop as you load the image, a nice feature.

Next, you can start adding layers. You have a choice of the layer types you want to add along the top. As you switch layer types or move through options, the current active layer will switch too. So once you have a layer edited, be sure to add a new layer before you start moving around to look at new layer types. You can go back to any layer in your stack at any time and adjust it, change it, or delete it.

Stackables 2

If you don’t want to start from scratch, you can start with Formulas. This is a great way to get an idea of what you can do with the app and all of the layers. You will be amazed at the variety of looks you can create. Once you select a Formula you like, tap the check mark at the bottom and then you can continue your edit, adding to or changing any of the layers within the Formula. If you create an edit you like, you can also save your own Formulas, email them and submit them to be added to the app. Pretty cool.

Stackables 3

Here are a few images I’ve edited in it so far, to give you an idea of the range. You can do highly textured looks:

Or more subtle edits:

I also used it for adding color, contrast and texture to this background:

The background was then layered with a photograph of an oak in Image Blender to get the final Harvest Moon image I shared in my last blog post:

Stackables is a very versatile app! Don’t be surprised if you see it start popping up more in my mobile tutorials. I’m a little addicted to it at the moment. 🙂
