You’ve written a book. Now what??

When you write a book, it feels like you liberate all you know. You distill it down to the essential topics. You think hard about how to present the concepts. You spend hours pulling together the right words, finding the best images, creating the right screen shots. You edit and correct, correct and edit.

And then it goes off into the world. And you think… Now what? My big challenge of learning, teaching, consolidating, writing about my iPhone art process is done. What comes next?

For me, that means it’s time to learn something new. It’s time to read all of those iPhone photography books I avoided, so they wouldn’t influence me too much. It’s time to take a course or two.

And so I came across the iPhoneography with Bob Weil online course. I was attracted to his art and thought, Hey, that collage stuff looks interesting! I’m going to try that.

Here’s one of my first successful collages I created using the techniques Bob teaches, from photographs I’ve taken in various places over the last couple of years:

We the People

We the People

It’s not my normal way of creating, which typically requires a single, carefully composed photograph, in combination with backgrounds or textures. This technique requires multiple source images that you can combine together into a single piece. It’s more conceptual. It’s been a challenging and interesting change of pace to create this way but I find I like the feeling of being a beginner again. It’s fun to be learning something new.

I normally don’t do a lot of promotion, but I have enjoyed the material and find it very complementary to my Art with an iPhone book and process, so I want to recommend it to you.

Bob has generously offered a great discount to my followers on his course, over 40% off of the regular price. The online course contains over 40 videos as well as some great extras like textures. (You can never have enough textures!) Plus, Bob has thrown in two short courses by Nicki Fitz-Gerald and Susan Tuttle, normally an extra charge, as a bonus for you. Very nice of him!

You can learn more about the course and register here. Let me know what you think!

Note: This special offer is only available through July 17.

My Book in Print!

Art with an iPhone Book Kat Sloma iPhone Photography

Yes. That’s my book. In print. Need I say more?

All that work, and all that waiting… It is a truly amazing feeling to finally have it in my hands and to know that it will be in readers hands shortly too. I hope it helps a few more people find as much creativity and joy with this fantastic device and medium as I’ve found.

You can have it in your hands in the next week, too. If you order on Amazon, the book will ship on January 12. That’s next Tuesday.

If you prefer an eBook, you can get it TODAY on Amazon or iBooks. Maybe other places too, take a look in your favorite eBook store.

If you prefer to shop local, you can ask your favorite bookstore to order it.

And when you get it… let me know what you think. Share a picture of yourself with it on social media and tag me. Drop me a note. Leave a review. For all that it seems like the end of a big journey, it’s really just the beginning of the next phase.

Come on everyone, let’s make some art with our iPhones!

Sneak Peek at my iPhone Book

My iPhone photography book is one step closer to being a real book! Last week I received the galley proof for editing, the final chance to make changes before it goes to print. Want a sneak peek?

The first thing my husband said, “It’s not going to be bound like that, is it?” No, of course not, I answered. It will have a real book binding. It will be 128 pages, 7.5×10, with 60 lessons.

It’s the perfect size — big enough to convey what you need to know to create iPhone art, small enough that it doesn’t overwhelm.

It’s fun to see what images they chose to highlight, the font, the layout. Here it is, in the real world, instead of just in my imagination.

The proof copy started out pristine, but now it’s covered in sticky notes and red lines. Not significant changes, but there are typos and a few updates for iOS 9.

I’ll finish it up in the next week and get it mailed back. The next time I will see it, it will be in print! Sooooo exciting!

You can preorder it here, and receive it as soon as it starts shipping in January. I greatly appreciate any and all preorders, which can have a big impact on the success of the book. Thank you for your ongoing support!
