That is a really good question…
Do you like surprises? Or do you want to know what is going to happen?
There is a part of me that delights in surprises. The kind of surprises that are truly a surprise – where you had no idea it was coming. At all. This could be a surprise in an image, as you look closer. It could be a surprise twist in a book, that takes the plot to an unexpected place. A surprise letter in the mail, or a package you weren’t expecting. I love those kinds of surprises.
I also hate surprises. If it’s something big, like a trip or an event, I like to plan. I like to anticipate. It’s half of the fun. If you spring a trip on me at the last minute, I will probably have fun, but I will have lost out on some of my enjoyment by the loss of anticipation. It also might mess up other plans I made, without knowing about the surprise. I don’t usually like “event” surprises.
I enjoy giving surprises, when I have a good idea. You know those ideas that are perfect for someone? Where everything clicks and you just KNOW that is what you need to do and they will love it? These kind of ideas can be few and far between but they are the ones I have to act upon when they come to me. But it can’t be all the time, that’s too much pressure. When the ideas don’t come, that’s what wish lists are for. Thank goodness for wish lists!
I guess I don’t have a good answer to the question, “To surprise or not to surprise.” Sometimes yes, sometimes no. How about you?
Today’s Many Muses Musing prompt is SURPRISE. Tomorrow’s prompt is WONDER. Come on over and join in!

love the texture on the door and the peek inside the window!
I feel just exactly the same about surprises as you, Kat! 🙂
Have a wonderful weekend! Oh, and I LOVE your photos – no surprise 😉
You must have been smiling BIG when you wrote this Rosie, knowing what was in the mail to me. The perfect kind of surprise!
🙂 hope you like it!
Gorgeous shots. I love the old door look and the vintage style inside. I love surprises and so agree with you on “traveling/event surprises”, not a fan of those.
Here’s wishing you lots of surprises you love!
Bright blessings,
Kathy
Kat, I share your mixed feelings about surprises, both receiving and giving them. But I love your photo of that door with its beautiful, worn blue paint and hints of delightful surprises inside.
Gorgeous picture. I’m the same, little surprises LOVE. Not a fan of event surprises. At all. There is nothing like the perfect surprise for the perfect person though. And surprises in pictures. 🙂
I am not a fan of event surprises, either. But the others, big and small, are delightful. Love the weathered door and the glow from within. 🙂
Like you, when I’m going places I don’t like to be surprised – I feel the need to be prepared, but the rest of the time I love surprises
Kat,
I’m not good with surprises. As a planner at heart, I don’t do well with spontenaity. I like the IDEA of surprises – just not the actuality. I wish I could embrace them in a better spirit and enjoy them for the sake of the person giving me the surprise.
On the other hand, there is nothing better than finding something unexpected in an image, something that didn’t show up until you viewed it on your monitor.
Isn’t it funny how we all have these boundaries of where we do and don’t want to be surprised? Like you, I find the IDEA of them is always nice. 🙂
Right there with ya sistah. Little surprises OK, big surprises….stressful. Surprises I can control OK, things that seem out of control-not so much. However, on the times you roll with those, they can turn out grand. Happy day Kat.
PS I miss your classes. : (
Thanks for the note Susan! I’m missing my classes too.
