What is it about windows that attracts me? Maybe it’s because I just like to wander around places, outside with my camera, and they are what I see from the street. Maybe it is the perfect frame within a frame opportunity. Maybe it’s the glimpse I see of the lives that go on inside.
Whatever the attraction, I’ve been capturing them a lot lately. This one is from one of the buildings I was scoping at Oregon State University the other day. I think it was one of the shop or maintenance buildings, there was just enough to see in the windows to make me curious as to what was inside. The books only offer a tiny clue.
What’s attracting you these days?

Hmmm, I too love windows and (doors and fences)…ha! Windows allow us to look through them and out of them and for me that means sometimes there is an emotional exchange. I live 25 miles north of Galveston which is a very old city with lots of history. I sometimes spend hours walking down only a few blocks getting caught up in the history of these houses, ones I can only wonder about. And even especially since hurricane Ike, I always wonder through the windows of the things that went on through them. I think the reason I love windows and doors is because they come with a story.
I love the simplicity of your photo, and it gives the viewer something to think about.
Dramatic skies are calling me – I just never seem to have a camera with me when I see them – or, more usually I’m driving down the motorway so impossible to take shots anyway!
I am also rather partial to doorways – especially ones that look like they have quite a history…
I love doorways too Lisa. Especially ones with old and interesting locks and handles.
Right there with you on the windows. I like them because I see something more most everytime I look. There’s the outside, the inside, and what’s reflected on the glass. It’s a chance for this straight and narrow girl to color outside the lines.
You take really wonderful window shots-you seem to capture well a mood or story. I like that 2nd one-the open books, the shabby window sill, the frame itself, the pine tree, and the curiousity of what’s inside beyond the stack of books.
I especially love the reflection you captured in the second shot, it gives a glimpse of what is viewed looking out as well.
Kat,
As you know, windows have been a major attraction for me – for their unique character and the complexity of layers (inside, outside, reflections).
I am working on a new series that I will be writing about next week – this is the first time that I conceived the idea before actually taking any shots. It’s rather exciting!
Very cool Brenda! Be sure to let me know when you post it, I’d love to take a look.
beautiful, just beautiful,,
I had to chuckle because everything attracts me! But, I LOVE looking inside the windows and taking photos. I do this a lot when I walk in the evenings in New York City. So fun!
One of my intentions for 2012 is getting out of my comfort zone on my photography side of life…so on a side note, I just read your article “Lessons from Abroad: Getting out of your Comfort Zone” and really enjoyed it. Thank you!
I’m so glad that you found and liked that Lessons from Abroad post! It seems so long ago now.
I love windows and I love these shots. Beautifully composed and the reflections in the second shot are so lovely.
I do like your composition in these – and those magazines/books really want to make you look closer. I’ve been thinking of doing a bit of a ‘windows’ project myself. Fascinating the whole looking out/looking in thing.
For me it is Umbrella’s! I love photographing umbrella’s. It is a rare occasion that I get the opprotunity to shoot them but I am drawn to them. 🙂
Oh, great subject. I love umbrellas too!
Light. Whether inside or out, just find myself – chasing the light. Nice captures, Miss K!
