Oregon Coast Travelogue

We spent the weekend unplugged from the Internet and plugged in to the family at our favorite spot on the coast, Washburne State Park. We hiked, we walked on the beach, we played, we made photographs. It was a wonderful break from our normal lives. We need to do this more often!

Enjoy a few pics from the area, all edited in Stackables with a formula I created called “Heceta.” It works great on landscapes!

UPDATE 3-June-15: If you would like the “Heceta” formula for your own use, do the following:
1. Make sure the Stackables app is installed on your iOS device.
2. On your iOS device, download the formula file from this link. (This is a Dropbox link, and you may be prompted to save the file to your Dropbox account, if you have one. Go ahead and save it to your Dropbox and then download from there.)
3. When you go to download or open the file, use “Open in…” and choose the “Open in Stackables” option.
4. Stackables will open and ask if you want to import the formula, click “Import.”
5. To use the formula, load a photo and then go to Favorite Formulas (the ones with a heart!). You will see the “Heceta” formula there. Have fun!!

Hello from the Sloma family!

I forget we have this amazing place, the Oregon Coast, just an hour from our home in Corvallis. One more reason to love where I live!

The Oregon coast is very beautiful, and is one of my favorite places, too, though it’s been years since I last visited there. It sounds like you had a wonderful family weekend. Your processing gives these images a sort of old-time postcard feeling that suits them well.

I doubt the Oregon Coast looks much different from when you were here. There is something timeless about the places along highway 101. I was really trying to go for an old postcard feel with the processing, so I’m glad I succeeded!

    Beautiful pictures.
Did you know the Dutch coast line is a couple of hundreds of beautiful wide sand beaches?
We often go there for a couple of days in winter when the beaches are almost completely empty and you can walk for hours alone.

I’d love to have your formula.
    TIA
    Ron

Lovely images, they remind me of old postcards. I would really like to have your Heceta formula, so kind of you to offer to share it. You certainly live in a beautiful part of the country, it’s on my bucket list.

All great photos.I think the Washburne beach is perfectly proportioned… I love the feel that I’m just arriving and it is the first breath of space,of view,of the silence of a beach…but I go to the beach to feel the vast expanse!

      May 31, 2015 at 1:59 pm

Great observation, the space leads you onto the beach. Thanks for your comment!

I love the look and feel of these. I too would like the formula. I use stackables but never seem to get quite what I see in others work.

It definitely takes practice to learn how to effectively use an app. Maybe I’ll give a little tutorial on that in the future!

Kat, your email asked for comments on open space.

I believe it is only the negative space which allows us to perceive the positive as such. You can’t work with one without the other. The best way to emphasize a positive element may be to surround it with a negative element so it becomes more noticeable in contrast.

This also works in music. Rests or silence can be a powerful backdrop for stark melodic or vocal statements which might otherwise go unnoticed if surrounded by too much competing activity.

    That’s the philosophical angle…

Back to photography or other visual art: the practical angle includes the point that negative space in photos allows them to be used more easily in commercial or illustrative settings, since the negative space can become a background for text.

    • Kat says

      May 31, 2015 at 1:56 pm

Great comments, John! I don’t usually think of the practical angle of allowing space in a photograph, but I can see where that’s important.

I, too, would like your formula. With iPhoto I am able to edit my photos, but more tools would be great.
