Isn’t it fun when something new comes together in your art? It’s like all of the preparation and experimentation and play lead you to this place where everything just clicks. There is a moment of “a-ha!” and you discover that you have a new process. That happened for me this week!
I think I discovered it on Saturday, when I created this digital painting:
I loved it. Absolutely loved it. And so I tried something similar with the next one:
And, oh my goodness, if I didn’t love that one too! And then I realized that I had discovered a new process. A certain type of photo, a certain sequence of editing, and I could get these gorgeous tree paintings. I’ve been experimenting all week and starting to learn what does and doesn’t work for the aesthetic I want. I’m playing within this process with variations.
I just can’t get enough! I find that after my dark, moody binge a couple of weeks ago I just want this color. And texture. And light. It feels like freedom.
Happy Paint Party Friday!!
I normally don’t post twice in one day but things got away from me with getting new eCourses ready for registration this week! Here’s what’s going on…
- Fuel Your Creativity, a one-week eCourse to kick off the new year with a creative burst, is open for registration. This is not a photography course. Everyone is invited!
- An all-new eCourse in the Find Your Eye series, Journey of Fascination, is open for registration too. This series will run January/February.
- December’s Exploring with a Camera will post tomorrow! Visit Friday and see what we’ll be studying this month.
Whew. I think that’s all for now…

These are really cool! I especially like the last one, love the colors. Happy PPF!
Beautiful! Happy PPF!

It’s nice to see you have so much fun, Kat and to hear your overflowing enthusiasm!
Have a lovely creative weekend!
Thanks Sandra. Yes, my enthusiasm is overflowing a bit! I guess this is one time when a bit of an overflow is not a bad thing. 🙂
Really awesome pieces, love the technique, the feeling and colors!
Oh these tree paintings are one of a kind! are they all digital?
Thank you! Yes, they are digitally created. I start with a photograph and build up layers to create the painting.
I think they look so amazingly painterly… wouldn’t they look amazing blown up and in series… they would be fabulous…xx
Thanks Tracey. I was thinking the same thing! I’ve been playing with different colors and I could see them hung together as a set.
Dear Kat you sound so happy!!! It feels like freedom for me too. It is absolutely beautiful with composition and colors. Absolutely amzing and charming. Definately carry on with those ideas and thoughts.
There is nothing more exciting than that Aha moment when it all comes together. Each painting is beautiful but the soft green one is my favorite. Your passion for what you are doing always comes through in both your words and your work.
Cool paintings- I love the mysterious quality you’ve created here- very beautiful!
Happy PPF,
Stephanie
Your digital work is so beautiful…LOVE the texture and colors.
Beautiful! There is nothing better that doing something great, and then being able to turn around and do it again!
I really like these digital creations, now I propose that these trees modeled using a work in acrylic think will surprise you, I sometimes have.
Hugs
Oh, this is freedom- your texture- painterly happiness! Happy PPF!
Just fabulous! I love the eerie feeling. Awesome!
Gorgeous! These look like beautiful impressionist oil paintings. Amazing. You really have found the right combo. Have you tried on other than trees? Wondering if it works for people or street shots.
I haven’t tried it on other types of shots yet. I do know that it doesn’t work on every tree shot, that’s for sure! Now that I’m figuring out what elements I need in the starting photograph, playing around with other subjects is a great idea!
Oh, these are beautiful, Kat! they really do look like paintings! The first one is my fave. Your excitement and creative energy comes through so strongly in this post. Brava!
I can’t quite contain my enthusiasm about all of this. 🙂
Gorgeous artwork, Kat!
Love the play between the figure and ground!
Amazing!
♥♥♥
Happy PPF!!
Mary
Thank you Mary! I especially appreciate the comment about figure and ground, I hadn’t thought out it, but that’s what I’m doing! Fun to recognize.
My goodness – how amazingly beautiful. Experimentation at its very best, resulting in a wondrous result.
It’s amazing where play and joy can lead us with our artwork! So much fun.
Loving your beautiful digital work, fabulous. Happy PPF, Annette x
Ohhh, I love those! They don’t look digital at all…well done! I love the first one best! Will you be selling a small print? I could see a 4×6 or 5×7 framed in my front room. 🙂
Beautiful digital art!!! They have such a nice flow too!Happy PPF!
wow these are really cool! THanks for the link – in that post you had described your process pretty well
I love your digital tree art too! You have really created a beautiful technique which works perfectly with the trees. My favorite is the last one, I love it’s darker tones and tiny specks of colour
I really like that 2nd image. This processing sets up a feeling of mystery which I find really appealing.
As a side note, wish I could take your new class in Jan/Feb. Your classes have always been great for me, the best match I can find out there anywhere. Alas, the 2nd half of this year has been one financialt thing after another-big vet bills, unexpected house repair 10x what I expected, a purchase of a desperately needed car replacement, more vet bills, etc, etc, etc. It just ain’t there. I hope you get a great turnout.
So is this something you do using Photoshop?
They are very beautiful and I do love the textured look!
Love the texture in these paintings. Great work!
There is magic in your images. Beautiful. Happy Belated PPF!
Oh Kat, these are just so beautiful. Yes they are like paintings. I love seeing your process to create the textures. What a leap you’ve taken here.
What gorgeous pictures – I am hopeless at digital image art – but then again I don’t spend much time doing it. Your pictures have so much mystery in them. Happy PPF
So pretty and peaceful! And yes, I love when things “click”!
Happy PPF!
These are wonderful–stark, haunting–
Happy PPF!
I love the way you play. Blessings, Janet PPF
Beautiful, Kat!
What apps are using for processing?
happy Holidays!
Thank you Elaine! I’ve shared the apps I’m using in some of my previous “paint party friday” posts, check out previous ones: http://kateyestudio.com/tag/my-painting
