Potential of the Day

Yesterday morning, on my walk in Parco di Monza, I saw this. Such amazing light and mist, and mystery. It seems an infinite path, you wonder where it ends.  What a difference a day makes, the intense rain of the previous day contributing the moisture for the mist in this otherwise sunny morning, making this image possible. A moment where you can sense the potential of the day.

Would you believe that this is straight out of the camera, and a point-and-shoot camera, no less? This supports my fundamental belief that it’s not the equipment that makes the photographer, it’s the eye. I keep coming back to this quote, “The best camera you have is the one you have with you.” I keep my Canon Elph with me at all times in the park, so I’m armed for whatever inspiration is shown to me. And lately, things are shown to me often. I must have just started to see it in a different way, because I doubt the park has changed substantially in the year and a half I’ve been here, but my enjoyment of it has deepened substantially and it’s become a wonderful source of inspiration.

Speaking of inspiration, have you been keeping up with the 9 Days of Inspiration on the Mortal Muses sites? If not, go right now and read this post by writer Cara Lopez Lee. Her words are incredible. And while you’re there, look around and leave a comment or two on the different sites to win some of the cool giveaways (including a set of my postcards – I have more on the way!).

I hope you have an inspirational day! The potential is there, in every day.

You give me hope to one day be a fairly good photographer. I have a little digital camera and have recently started playing with it. This picture in this post is wonderful. And I like that you say it is not the equipment but the eye that makes a good photographer.

Kat you have definitely proven the point that it's the equipment, but the photographer that makes the photograph! Well done!

My eight year old GS turned to me last night at his brother's band concert and said, The light is great in here… If one can see the light, I agree you have all you need to take the shot.

I carry a G11 everywhere I go and just like you have found, some times it is just about being at the right place at the right time. Beautiful shot Miss K and great theology!

there's something so zenlike and meditative about a row of trees — and a double row is that much more inviting .. as you say, an infinite path. really really beautiful — and inspiring!

i so agree – i carry my camera bag with me everywhere, and if i can't tote the dslr my nikon coolpix or my cell phone does the trick!

What a beautiful shot! And I so agree with you about the camera. Every time someone says to me, "What a great shot – you must have a fabulous camera", I find myself super annoyed, but I bite my tongue and realize they are trying to be complimentary!

What a wonderful shot, Kat. I like the quote, "The best camera you have is the one you have with you." I would add that the eye of this photographer improved the results from the camera. And, oh my goodness, thanks for the completely unexpected mention!

Very beautiful photo. And I agree – you can have the best camera in the world, but if you don't have the eye – forget it. I also think how interesting it is how much our way to see changes over time.

Those Canon Elphs really pack a punch don't they. I'm always amazed by how mine hold its own with the DSLR in good light.
