Can inanimate objects have personality? I was wondering this as I selected this photo. I believe: Absolutely, they can! Maybe it’s not that they have personality on their own, but they have personality given to them by their creator, or their owner. The personality of the inanimate object is a reflection of the personality of the creator.
Take this door. On it’s own, it would just be a door in a wall of a building in Bath. That could be it, but look at how much personality the creator and the current owner have given it… obviously, color – bright pink! And style, it opens in two halves. And the touch of the pane window at the top with the lights both inside and out is nice. Also look at the tile on the step, no bare concrete here! The black drain pipe adds personality too. It could be painted to blend in with the wall but instead it’s a dramatic design statement, along with the black at the bottom of the wall, giving interest to an otherwise bare wall, setting off the door.
Does this door have personality? Definitely! I would love to know the person who created this entryway, but I love just knowing that they are in the world, creating fun stuff like this for the rest of us to see. One of the things that caught my eye during our time in Bath were doors like this one. In a town where there is so much the same – Georgian townhomes of bath stone standing row upon row – the little touches like this show the individuality of the inhabitants. Truly a theme you’ll find here over and over again in the Kat Eye View.

What an interesting topic and I also take photos of doors as I travel…there are so many differences. I think they say something about the place, the personality…the entryway into a home or space. I like it when people decorate their door as well, with a wreath or maybe a new baby ribbon! 🙂

Doors are a wonderful subject! I'm afraid my front door is pretty bland. My favorite city for doors is Buenos Aires–the doors created in the late 19th century there are amazing works of art. I must dig out some photos. Happy weekend!

I'd love to have one of those Dutch doors – the kind where the top half opens up. Or a red door with a stained glass transom. Or a door that opens into a beautiful courtyard garden. Lots of happy dreaming possibilities here!!
It's funny, red doors have always scared me and not because of The Shining, LOL. But you're right, everything has energy, everything is sacred. Even red doors.
My new home lacks door creativity. even the doorbell is boring. I wish I could change my door once a week actually. does that make me a split personality?
yes, it's an interesting topic and, yes it's soo important (my opinion). I think the door can totally make or break the look of a house and I'm really picky about it. It was one of the very first things we changed when moving into our current house. We have a mahogany-colored stained oak with leaded glass in the top three quarters or so. I think it has a lot of character. I also love photographing both doors and windows!
I love doors—and I love England. Wish I was there! I do agree that inanimate objects can have loads of personality—look at interior design! So much personality, of course infused by their creators!
I have a whole series of door photos I took in Charleston, SC one year. I love doors and am drawn to them in all the architecture I see. I recently took a photo of two bright red doors on a church that would have been a rather staid place had it not been for the doors.

my fave was a brilliant purple door in scotland with potted purple pansies on the doorstep! and to think that's when the camera quit! o well – memories live on 🙂
