At Mortal Muses we are finishing up our “Light Fantastic” theme with a blog hop, and I thought I would share a story…
On my photo walk with Julie last week, we were nearing the end of our walk, photographing the gorgeous autumn trees in a park. The sun was starting to go behind the clouds and she said, “Oh no, we’re losing the light.”
I laughed and said, “Oh yes, we’re getting the light!”
I confessed to Julie that there is something she needed to know about me… I love indirect light. I love the soft, diffused light of alleyways and cloudy days that gently highlights form and makes color pop. I took this image after we lost found the light. I find the colors incredible! This is my kind of light.
Now you know my light fantastic. What’s your favorite light?

WOW, these colours are beautiful. I don’t shoot well in sunshine either to be honest unless its streaming through tree/leaves etc.
These leaves truly epitomise autumn for me. Gorgeous.
Gorgeous colour, Kat! Love your light fantastic!
Because of my snow-covered landscape for much of the year, I prefer indirect light or slightly cloudy days. I like the blue light of late afternoon best. The colors of the leaves in your shot seem so pure. Enjoy your autumn.
Oh I totally know what you mean. The leaves pop against the dark sky like nothing else!
I love cloudy days when the fall colors are present. The diffuse light just seems to bring out the intensity of the color.
Your photo is so vibrant and lovely!
Kat,
Gorgeous photo! I love diffused light also. I also want to tell you that I think your new blog is FANTASTIC!! It is beautiful. I can’t wait to sign up for one of your classes. Congrats on the new look.
Angela
Thanks so much Angela! It would be fun to have you in class sometime!
Gorgeous Kat! These leaves just make my heart soar!!! Love your story too! And great answer : )
I personally ♥ Love back light, the one that makes your hair glow 🙂
Hi Kat,
You brought out a great point. It seems some folks feel that bright sunlight is really going to make colors shine, but I find – as you noted – that it is often quite the reverse. Subjects can be tricky to shoot in direct, strong sunlight and color can often look washed out. Silvery gray days are lovely in the autumn, the colors glow!
My fav light is late aft/early eve, but all types fascinate me. It’s often a matter of matching the “right” light to the subject, finding the light that will best reveal my vision for the subject.
Perfectly said Anna: The “right” light to reveal your vision for a subject. I love that.
I’m always looking for the low light..the shadows..the deep colors. Like you – the bright light just doesn’t do it for me. Early morning..late afternoon – those are the best times of day!
Beautiful color and light in those leaves!
Gorgeous photos and colors. Since I was a child I am in love with autumn leaves. We don’t have that on Puerto Rico and I had the opportunity to enjoy then for the first time in New Jersey in 1988. Since then I love them more. I have to take a photography course soon, the only photos I take with my Nikon are the properties i have to appraise Ja Ja. My son is a photographer and he helped me a lot with it. Thanks Kat for the sweet comments in my blog. I love surface design as I love collage painting. This new path in my creative career is taking me to the place I always wanted to be. Even with my busy schedule I need to take the time for that. As you may know it is not easy to balance the professional job with a creative business but we can make it. Right?
It’s hard, but we can absolutely make it work Elizabeth! I am a firm believer. We can remind each other when the going gets tough.
