Time to Learn

The time was summer, 2014. The place, my cousin’s barn in Ohio. I was with my Mom and siblings visiting my Dad’s side of the family, many of whom are Amish. We were getting a tour of the barn, one I had run through with my cousins as a kid, and here was this one day old jersey calf. My cousin’s son, showing off a bit, went and got a bottle to feed the calf. My iPhone out and ready, I was able to capture the moment. One of my favorite photographs, ever.

That’s what I love about the iPhone camera… It’s there when you need it, it’s unobtrusive, and it captures great images.

Are you ready to learn how to use your iOS or Android camera to take great photos? Want to begin to explore editing with apps? My next workshop series kicks off this coming Saturday, with an intro course:

Mobile Photography 1: Introduction for iOS and Android Devices
The Arts Center, Corvallis, Oregon
February 13, 2016, 1pm to 4pm
Workshop description here
Register here

If you live farther away, I have one day workshops coming up in April in Hillsboro, OR and August at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology on the Oregon Coast that you may be interested in traveling to. See my upcoming workshop schedule here.

Or, of course, there is always my book! Art with an iPhone: A Photographer’s Guide to Creating Altered Realities is shipping now and covers similar material as my workshop series.

Either way, I’ve got you covered if you want to learn!

Composition Workshop in January – Register Now

I’m so excited to bring you a brand new workshop in January!

Have you been wanting to improve your photography? To create more interesting images from the world around you? It all starts with composition.

Christmas Valley Sand Dune Kat Sloma iPhone Photography Composition

I believe improving your composition skills is the single most important thing you can do to improve your photography, with any type of camera. But, composition can be really hard to get your mind wrapped around. That’s why I’ve developed simple strategy to help you create compelling compositions in your photographs without worrying about a list of do’s and don’t’s.

And the Corvallis Library is sponsoring a workshop, free to the public, where you can learn this strategy!

Out of the Box: A New Composition Strategy for Creating Compelling Photographs
Corvallis Public Library, Main Meeting Room, Corvallis, Oregon

And if you aren’t close enough to attend? I’ve got resources to learn about composition available for you too:

  • My upcoming book, Art with an iPhone, covers similar concepts on composition, which applies to any type of camera. You can preorder today, it ships in a month’s time!
  • My eBook, Digital Photography for Beginners, covers the basics of composition any photographer needs to know. It is available for immediate download from PhotographyBB.
  • Exploring with a Camera, a series of articles I’ve written for my blog over the last few years, covers a wide variety of composition topics. Have fun exploring!

Just One Week to Workshop

Are you wanting to take great photos with your smartphone? I’ll teach you the secrets of capturing great photographs and simple photo editing techniques to make them stand out from the crowd.

Join me in Corvallis, Oregon in the afternoon on Saturday, September 12 with your iPhone or Android phone, and you’ll learn some skills. More details and registration links are available here.

Today I’m sharing some recent images of my kitties, created using my iPhone and the techniques and apps you will learn in the workshop. These are a great example of the immediacy the phone camera enables in my imagery. If I had to run off and get my big camera, these images would not exist.

Registration is Open!

Registration is now open for a new mobile photography workshop series I’m doing in the spring. Take a look and register soon, because there are already people signing up and last fall these classes filled up to capacity.

I’ve been loving the half day workshops, where you get enough information to go off and play but not enough to be overwhelmed. This series builds from basic photography to artistic edits to advanced techniques, giving you a few weeks in between workshops to practice with the material so you can absorb it better. There is something new for everyone in this series, even if you’ve taken one of my Intro or Smartphone Art workshops before.

If you don’t live close enough to take advantage of the series, never fear! All of this content will be in my book (coming out next year!) and I’d love to teach the 1 or 2-day versions of the series, known as Smartphone Art, in a town near you. Drop me a note!
